This, Irma Rombauer's bible, is a must-have cookbook. I found this following comment from Prepare To Meet Your Bakerina to be spot-on:
The Joy of Cooking and The Joy of Sex. In my opinion the former should be issued to every 10-year-old and the latter to every 12-year-old without fail. Sure there are better, more updated cookbooks and sex books, but these are solid and stand the test of time. Both are left lying around the house for my children to borrow whenever they feel the urge.
I've been told that the recipes are generally bland and uninteresting, but I haven't found this to be the case. Besides, it's always easy to spice up a good, solid recipe. I love this book because it has time-tested recipes for basic things like pie crust or banana bread, and because it is organized by major ingredient and has extensive descriptions of the qualities of these ingredients.
My mother bought me the copy I have. Stupidly, I dropped it at some point and it now exists in two slightly less hefty volumes.
